UGANDA PREMEIR LEAGUE

In a major U-turn, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed that the Uganda Premier League will revert to its old and familiar format.

The decision was reached on Saturday following a high-level meeting between FUFA officials, the Uganda Premier League secretariat, and club representatives at FUFA House in Mengo.

FUFA President Moses Magogo disclosed that after a series of engagements and consultations, the federation decided to heed the concerns of key stakeholders, including clubs and fans, who had voiced strong opposition to the new format.

“As FUFA, we have listened to the clubs and other stakeholders and agreed that we revert to the old format for this season. We will go back and make more reviews, further consultations, and we will get back to it next season,” Magogo announced.

Out of the 16 top-flight clubs, 11 were present at the decisive meeting, which primarily focused on ironing out issues surrounding the structure of the league.

Magogo clarified that while the competition format was the main agenda, other reforms introduced earlier in the season remain under review.

“In today’s meeting, we have only discussed the format, but the other reforms that were introduced will continue to be discussed,” he added.

The reversal comes after weeks of discontent from clubs and supporters who criticized the new system, describing it as confusing and unfair.

Despite most clubs eventually agreeing to participate under protest, Vipers SC stood firm in defiance, boycotting their opening fixture against Kitara FC at Namboole Stadium.

The federation’s latest decision is seen as a victory for clubs and fans who have long demanded the preservation of the league’s traditional structure, a move many hope will restore stability and excitement to Uganda’s top-tier football competition.
