Crested Cranes Close in on WAFCON Dream with Vital Win Over Ethiopia

The Crested Cranes took a giant leap toward securing a spot in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after claiming a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in the first leg of their qualifier at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Friday, February 21, 2025.

From the opening whistle, both sides showed determination, creating several opportunities. Ethiopia’s Senaf Wakuma nearly broke the deadlock early but failed to convert a clear chance.

Uganda responded with pressure of their own, as Aisha Nantongo and Zainah Namuleme came close to scoring, only to be denied by Ethiopia’s resilient defense and sharp goalkeeping.

The first half ended without a breakthrough, despite both teams’ attacking intent. The Crested Cranes returned from the break with renewed energy, taking control of the game and pushing aggressively for the opener.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 89th minute after Zainah Namuleme was fouled just outside the penalty area. With composure and precision, she fired a stunning free kick into the top corner, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

The momentum didn’t stop there. In the 90th minute, Ethiopia’s defense faltered under pressure, allowing Fazila Ikwaput to capitalize on a loose ball and calmly slot home Uganda’s second goal, putting the game firmly out of reach for the visitors.

With a solid two-goal cushion, the Crested Cranes head to Ethiopia in a commanding position. A loss by a single goal or better would be enough to see them through to the next stage of WAFCON qualification. The decisive second leg is set for Tuesday, February 26, 2025.
