Uganda Premier League – Villa Claim First Place as Maroons and NEC Seal Crucial Victories

Tuesday, November 25 delivered drama, goals and decisive movements on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table, with SC Villa climbing to the top, Maroons returning to winning ways, and NEC grinding out a crucial result.

At Bombo, SC Villa continued their impressive charge by scraping a 1-0 victory over a stubborn UPDF side.

The triumph stretched their winning streak to five matches, adding to earlier successes against Police (2-1), Kitara (1-0), NEC (2-1) and Buhimba United Saints (3-0).

With 16 points collected from seven games, the 17-time record champions now sit two points clear of Police.

The decisive moment arrived in the 65th minute when Ibrahim Kasinde punished a defensive mix-up in the UPDF backline, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Abdul Kimera with composure.

Villa had earlier celebrated prematurely when Najib Yiga found the net in the sixth minute, but the assistant referee raised the flag for offside after Kasinde’s delivery.

UPDF almost found themselves further behind shortly after conceding, but Kimera stretched athletically to tip Reagan Mpande’s effort out for a corner.

The army side now slumps to their fifth defeat in seven games, sitting third from the foot of the table with six points.

At Luzira, Maroons finally lit up the Prisons Grounds with a commanding 3-0 victory over Lugazi, their second win of the campaign.

Raymond Walugembe pounced in the opening minute after a goalkeeping misjudgment, before turning provider for Jackson Nunda’s 34th-minute finish.

Substitute Ivan Asaba iced the contest in the 87th minute to seal a rare but emphatic win. The result moves Maroons up to 12th on eight points, just behind Lugazi, who remain on nine.

Meanwhile at Lugogo, NEC squeezed out a tight 1-0 win against struggling Calvary. Charles Waibi struck in the 71st minute after a clever setup from Innocent Media.

The three points lift NEC to ninth, level on nine points, while Calvary remain marooned at the bottom with just one point and no victory to their name.

The league continues on Wednesday at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, where a double-header awaits: URA take on Buhimba United Saints at 5pm, before a heavyweight clash sees Express face defending champions Vipers SC later in the night.
