NEC FC battled to a resilient 1–1 stalemate against Vipers SC in an engaging Uganda Premier League contest played under the Friday night lights at the Phillip Omondi Stadium.
The home side nearly stunned the visitors inside the opening exchanges when forward Innocent Media unleashed a low drive that forced Vipers shot-stopper Alfred Mudekereza into a sharp early intervention.
NEC’s assertive start was rewarded on 20 minutes. Livingstone Mulondo mistimed a challenge on the lively Innocent Media inside the area, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Mustapha Kizza stepped up with composure, sending Mudekereza the wrong way to hand the hosts a deserved lead.
Media remained a constant source of trouble for Vipers’ backline. In the 35th minute, he once again outpaced his marker, only to be denied by Mudekereza’s reliable gloves.
Sensing the need for midfield stability, Vipers made a tactical switch moments before the interval, withdrawing Taddeo Lwanga for the more attack-minded Milton Karisa.
The decision swiftly paid off. Barely five minutes into the second period, Karisa latched onto a loose ball and unleashed a ferocious finish beyond goalkeepr Hannington Ssebwalunyo to restore parity for the visitors.
With momentum shifting, Vipers pushed aggressively for a late winner, but NEC’s disciplined defensive block absorbed the pressure and preserved a critical point on home turf.
The result maintains Vipers’ place at the summit with 17 points from seven outings, while NEC stay eighth on 11 points after nine matches.
