The Ugandan football family is in mourning following the death of former Uganda Cranes star Abbey Nassur, whose passing was confirmed on Sunday morning, January 18, at his home in Naguru.
Nassur, a revered figure in the history of Ugandan football, had been battling osteoporosis for several years, a condition that confined him to a wheelchair in his later life.

His death marks another painful loss for the sport, coming just weeks after the demise of another Cranes legend, Polly Ouma, who passed away on December 30.
During his illustrious playing career, Nassur was a key member of the historical national team and represented Uganda at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 1974 and 1978.
His contributions on the continental stage helped cement his status as one of the country’s most respected footballers of his generation.
At the regional level, Nassur was part of the Uganda Cranes sides that dominated East and Central Africa, winning three CECAFA titles and playing a pivotal role in establishing Uganda as a regional football powerhouse during his era.
Abbey Nassur will be remembered not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his enduring influence on Ugandan football history. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
