The Round of 16 games in this year’s Uganda Cup successfully came to a climax on Friday evening, with Express sealing the final spot.
It should be noted that the games began on Monday, running through the week up to Friday, where confirmation of the eight quarterfinalists was sealed.
Happy Boys Kagaba, a Regional League entity from Kassanda, was the first team to secure a spot in the quarterfinals, overcoming Six O’Clock. The game ended goalless, but the former edged the penalty shootout 5-3 to progress.
On Tuesday, there was a double header at MTN-Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, with NEC hosting Lugazi while KCCA faced Onduparaka.
In the early kickoff, NEC defeated Lugazi 2-0 thanks to goals from Gideon Odongo and Samuel Ssekamatte.
Later on, KCCA put up a scintillating display to dispatch Onduparaka 5-0 with goals coming from Sammy Ssebaduka, Saidi Mayanja, Emmanuel Anyama (brace) and Alex Yiga.
On Wednesday, Kitara registered the biggest winning margin at this stage, outwitting Bunyaruguru 6-0 at Royals Park, Butema. Samuel Kato Nemehimana, Gaddafi Wahab, Benjamin Nyakoojo, Living Kabon, George Ssenkaaba and Jimmy Kalema were all on target for the Royals.
On the same day, holders Vipers overcame Iganga United 4-0 at home thanks to a brace apiece from Hillary Mukundane and Gusto Mulongo.
SC Villa also secured their spot in the quarterfinals on Thursday, edging Maroons in a closely contested game played at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba. Andrew Otim got the lone goal.
Today, URA dispatched Tapoh with a 3-0 scoreline thanks to goals from Olimi Nwara, Godfrey Ssekibengo and skipper Moses Okabo Aliro.
Express sealed the final spot with a 4-0 win over Red Devo at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. Kenneth Kimera bagged a brace while Harbert Asiimwe and Henry Wamala scored a goal each.
The FUFA Competitions Department will soon communicate when the draw for the quarterfinals will be conducted.
