Former Harambee Stars Captain Victor Wanyama Announces Retirement

Kenyan midfield icon Victor Wanyama has officially brought the curtain down on a remarkable professional career, announcing his retirement from football at the age of 34.

The former Harambee Stars captain confirmed the decision through his social media platforms, closing a chapter that saw him rise from humble beginnings in Nairobi to the grandest stages of European football.

“Today I announce my retirement from football. Four different countries, six different clubs. A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch,” Wanyama shared in an emotional message.

Widely known as the “Lion of Muthurwa,” Wanyama’s journey is one of resilience and steady ascent. He first made his mark locally with Nairobi City Stars and AFC Leopards before venturing abroad, where he built a reputation as a commanding and disciplined midfield enforcer.

His European breakthrough came in Sweden with Helsingborg, followed by a stint in Belgium with Beerschot, but it was at Celtic FC where he truly blossomed. During his time in Scotland, Wanyama clinched two Scottish Premiership titles and a Scottish Cup, earning individual accolades including a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year.

A move to the English Premier League saw him feature prominently for Southampton FC before securing a high-profile switch to Tottenham Hotspur FC. At Spurs, he was part of the squad that reached the UEFA Champions League Final 2019, finishing as runners-up in a historic campaign.

Wanyama later took his experience to North America, representing CF Montréal, where he added the Canadian Championship to his honours list.

On the international stage, Wanyama earned over 60 caps for Kenya national football team, captaining the side at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt—Kenya’s first appearance at the tournament in 15 years.

As he steps away from playing, Wanyama has already set his sights on the dugout. He revealed plans to transition into coaching and will begin working toward his UEFA A License later this year.
