Uganda Cranes’ AFCON 2025 journey came to an abrupt halt after a 3–1 defeat to Nigeria in their decisive Group C encounter at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.
A brace from Raphael Onyedika and a Paul Onuachu strike proved too much for the Cranes, whose evening was further complicated by a red card to substitute goalkeeper Jamal Salim Magoola.
Rogers Mato grabbed a late consolation, but it was merely a footnote on a difficult night for Uganda.
Here is how the Cranes players rated in a bruising contest against the Super Eagles:
Starting XI
Denis Onyango – 6.0
Pulled off a fine save to deny Onuachu early on but was eventually beaten by the same striker. Looked uncomfortable before being withdrawn at halftime, possibly due to injury.
Kenneth Ssemakula – 3.0
Endured a torrid afternoon on the right. Too passive in duels and repeatedly exposed by Simon Moses. Poor positioning contributed to Nigeria’s opener.
Aziz Kayondo – 5.0
Quietly solid without being outstanding. Struggled to impose himself against Moses Chukwueze but showed resilience and avoided costly mistakes.
Tobby Sibbick – 4.0
Found it difficult to cope with Paul Onuachu’s physical presence. Lacked both the pace and strength to consistently contain the Nigerian striker.
Jordan Obita – 4.0
A challenging evening up against Victor Osimhen. Beaten for pace on several occasions and failed to assert authority at the back.
Baba Alhassan – 4.0
Showed promise early alongside Bobosi Byaruhanga in midfield but faded as Nigeria took control. Sacrificed following the red card as Uganda reshuffled.
Bobosi Byaruhanga – 5.0
Battled gamely but was second best in many physical exchanges. Still managed a few progressive passes, including one that briefly unsettled Nigeria’s defence.
Travis Mutyaba – 4.0
Couldn’t replicate his lively display from the Tanzania match. Largely anonymous and withdrawn at halftime.
Rogers Mato – 6.0
Provided Uganda’s lone bright moment with a well-taken late goal. His movement and composure stood out, though his overall involvement was limited.
Denis Omedi – 3.0
Missed a promising chance early in the game and struggled to influence proceedings. Replaced at the break.
Uche Ikpeazu – 6.0
Arguably Uganda’s standout performer. Offered strong hold-up play, bullied defenders in aerial duels and brought others into play with his physical presence.
Substitutes
Allan Okello – 6.0
Introduced at halftime as Uganda chased the game. Despite being a man down, he showed creativity and played a key role in setting up the consolation goal.
Jamal Salim Magoola – 2.0
A disastrous cameo. Sent off shortly after coming on, leaving the Cranes with an uphill task they never recovered from.
Steven Mukwala – 3.0
Worked tirelessly after being introduced but the red card severely limited his impact.
Alionzi Nafian – 3.0
Thrown into the deep end at a difficult moment. Had little influence on the game and was not directly at fault for the goals conceded.
