Richard Ayiko’s early header proved decisive as Lugazi FC edged UPDF FC 1-0 on Wednesday evening at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe, in the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League Matchday 17 contest.
The hosts struck the breakthrough in the 15th minute when Abdul Kalanzi delivered a dangerous free kick into the area and Ayiko climbed highest to nod home with authority, giving the UPDF goalkeeper no chance.
Lugazi maintained their shape for the remainder of the first half, staying compact and disciplined while restricting the army side to limited attacking opportunities. UPDF attempted to respond but lacked the cutting edge needed to restore parity before the interval.
After the restart, UPDF coach rang changes, bringing on Rashid Faridi in place of Abbas Lutty Nsubuga, but the game turned tense and physical, with the rhythm disrupted by frequent stoppages.
As the battle intensified, Denis Sekitoleko, Richard Ayiko, and Juma Ssajabi all entered the referee’s book in a heated second half.
Both teams continued to shuffle their lineups in search of control. Lugazi introduced Moses Buga, while UPDF threw on Asaph Segujja and Swaib Kasujja Kalule to increase attacking threat.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, Lugazi remained resilient at the back and successfully protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The victory pushes Lugazi up to 10th place with 18 points, marking their fourth win of the season, while UPDF’s poor run deepens as they stretch their winless streak to eight matches.
UPDF remain 15th on 12 points in the relegation zone, with their last league victory dating back to December 5, 2025, when they beat Lugazi 2-0 in Bombo.
Ayiko’s match-winning contribution earned him the Man of the Match award.
UPDF will next travel to face NEC on March 3, while Lugazi visit St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on March 4. In another Matchday 17 fixture, Calvary FC and Express FC played to a 0-0 draw at Midigo P/S.
