Moroccan outfit FAR Rabat produced a stunning away performance to knock out holders Pyramids FC, sealing a 2-1 victory in Cairo and progressing 3-2 on aggregate.
Coming into the decisive return leg at the 30 June Stadium, Pyramids were widely tipped to capitalize on home turf after a 1-1 stalemate in Rabat. Instead, it was the visitors who struck first, silencing the crowd as Reda Salim finished off a rapid counterattack inside just 10 minutes.
FAR Rabat maintained their composure after the interval and doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. Salim once again proved instrumental, delivering a precise corner that was emphatically headed in by Rabie El Harimat to make it 2-0, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb.
Although Fiston Mayele pulled one back for Pyramids to spark faint hopes of a comeback, the Moroccan side held firm to complete a memorable upset and dethrone the defending champions.
Elsewhere in Cairo, another heavyweight fell as Al Ahly were eliminated by Tunisian powerhouse Espérance de Tunis in a thrilling five-goal contest.
Esperance edged the second leg 3-2 to wrap up a 4-2 aggregate triumph, having already secured a narrow 1-0 advantage in the first encounter in Tunis. The result marks a significant statement from the North African giants, who outclassed the record champions over two legs.
