The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on Wednesday unveiled former Ghanaian international Laryea Kingston as the new head coach entrusted with steering the country’s junior national teams.
Announced by FUFA Chief Executive Edgar Watson at Kadiba Stadium, Kingston will oversee the Boys’ Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 squads as the federation’s youth football custodian.
FUFA confirmed that Brian Ssenyondo will retain responsibility for the Under-17 side at the imminent FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar a short-term stewardship that will conclude once Kingston assumes full-time duties.
A UEFA A and CAF B license holder, Kingston arrives with pedigree both on the touchline and from his playing days.
He previously contributed to Ghana’s Under-17 setup and enjoyed a senior international spell with the Black Stars between 2002 and 2010.
His résumé features stints at clubs across Europe and beyond, including Vitesse (Netherlands), Terek Grozny (Russia) and Hapoel Tel Aviv (Israel), as well as a domestic link with Hearts where he shared the pitch with ex-Uganda winger David Obua.
Laryea is also familiarly connected to Ugandan football audiences through family ties: he is the younger brother of Richard Kingson, Ghana’s custodian at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
Notably, Kingston was part of the Ghana squad that recorded a victory over the Uganda Cranes in Accra in September 2005.
The federation has signalled ambition by consolidating youth leadership under a single, experienced figure tasked with harmonising coaching methodology, talent identification and progression pathways across age groups. Kingston’s appointment is aimed at forging a coherent pipeline from grassroots prospects to senior international prospects.
