Kiplimo Heads to Portugal for Lisbon Half Marathon Test

Uganda’s long-distance sensation Jacob Kiplimo is set to return to one of his favourite hunting grounds after confirming his participation in the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon scheduled for 8th March 2026 in Portugal.

The Lisbon race forms part of Kiplimo’s key preparations ahead of the highly anticipated London Marathon, where the reigning world cross-country champion is expected to be among the leading contenders.

Kiplimo had initially been expected to feature at the Barcelona Half Marathon, but Uganda Athletics officials opted for a change of plan, describing the decision as tactical and aimed at sharpening the athlete for the bigger challenge ahead.

Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet confirmed the switch, revealing that Lisbon was deliberately chosen as the ideal platform for Kiplimo’s build-up.

Lisbon carries special memories for Kiplimo, having previously delivered one of the most historic performances of his career at the same event. In 2021, the Ugandan star stunned the athletics world by setting a half marathon world record, clocking an astonishing 57 minutes and 31 seconds.

The Olympic gold medalist heads into the race in excellent condition following a brilliant start to the year, where he captured gold at the World Cross Country Championship.

His form has remained consistent since last October when he secured an emphatic victory at the Chicago Marathon, further establishing his reputation as one of the world’s finest endurance athletes.

However, Kiplimo will not have it easy in Lisbon as he is expected to battle against a strong field featuring elite runners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, and other traditional long-distance powerhouses.
