Lady Cranes bounce back to claim bronze at Rugby Africa Women’s 7s

After the disappointment of a semifinal exit to hosts Kenya, Uganda’s Lady Cranes responded with character and verve to clinch the bronze medal at the Rugby Africa Women’s 7s in Kenya.

From the whistle the Lady Cranes attacked with purpose. Peace Lekuru, Samiya Ayikoru and Grace Nabaggala raced over for early converted scores that handed Uganda the initiative and unsettled their opponents.

Madagascar then rallied, a slick team move, neat offloads and relentless support play saw them finish under the posts and briefly test Uganda’s composure.

But the Lady Cranes steadied. Suzan Adong powered through contact to reassert control, and Lydia Namabiro, who was a constant menace, dotted down to extend the margin to 33–12 and effectively seal the podium place.

The second half introduction of Yvonne Najjuma injected fresh momentum; her strong carries pierced the line and she created the final touch for Unity Namulala’s try under the posts.

There were echoes of last year’s campaign another semifinal stumble followed by a podium finish, yet much to applaud. Namabiro’s tournament-leading try tally underlined her growing influence on the continental stage, while the squad’s resilience and cohesion offered plenty of encouragement as Ugandan women’s sevens rugby looks ahead.
