Onyango’s Return Sparks Fresh Hope as Uganda Cranes Eye World Cup Push

Uganda Cranes icon Denis Onyango has branded his comeback to the national setup as a heartfelt new chapter, underscoring the importance of fusing veteran know-how with youthful enthusiasm ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 39-year-old shot-stopper, who stepped away from international duty in 2021, reunited with the team during their opening drills at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Uganda is gearing up for back-to-back encounters against Mozambique on Friday and Somalia next Monday.

“Honestly, I’m delighted to wear the jersey again. It feels like a second round for me,” Onyango expressed with a grin after training.

“The reception has been amazing. Even my club teammates wished for this day, and I’m happy it finally came.”

The veteran admitted his return has drawn mixed opinions, with some welcoming his leadership and others worrying it may limit playing time for rising talents such as Jamal Salim, Joel Mutakubwa, and Nafian Alionzi.

However, he stressed that every position in the squad remains competitive.

“No one is handed a place automatically,” Onyango emphasized. “It’s all about who proves ready and delivers in training. What matters most is seeing Uganda victorious.”

While lauding the energy of the younger generation, Onyango highlighted the irreplaceable value of experience in high-pressure matches.

“Football is about composure and maturity, but it also demands intensity and endurance. That’s why both young and senior players are crucial. When we combine ideas, we become stronger,” he explained.

Currently sitting fourth in Group G with nine points, six adrift of table leaders Algeria, the Cranes recognize the significance of the upcoming fixtures in shaping their qualification path.

“We need collective spirit, encouragement, and belief,” Onyango added. “At the end of the day, the scoreboard is what counts.”

Uganda will first welcome Mozambique at Namboole before shifting attention to Somalia, in matches that could define their journey towards the 2026 World Cup.
