The draw for the Round of 16 in the 52nd edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup has produced several intriguing fixtures as teams battle for places in the quarter-finals.
The draw was conducted on Thursday morning at FUFA Complex, bringing together clubs from the topflight, the FUFA Big League and various regional leagues.
One of the headline fixtures will see record champions SC Villa take on fellow Uganda Premier League side Maroons FC in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
Defending champions Vipers SC will host FUFA Big League outfit Iganga United at St Mary’s Stadium as they begin their quest to retain the trophy.
Elsewhere, former winners KCCA FC have been drawn against second-tier side Onduparaka FC, while Kitara FC will welcome Bunyaruguru United at their Butema stronghold.
In another fixture, Express FC face Red Devo FC, while URA FC will lock horns with North-East regional side Tapoh FC at Hamz Stadium.
Two regional league sides, Happy Boys Kagaba and Six O’clock FC, will battle it out in a lower division clash as both teams seek a historic place in the last eight.
Meanwhile, NEC FC will face either Lugazi FC or Police FC depending on the outcome of a pending judicial case.
The matter arose after Lugazi defeated Police 2–0 in the previous round, but Police lodged a complaint claiming striker Umar Kyebatala was double-licensed in the same competition. The player is alleged to have earlier featured for Football Classroom against Red Ants before appearing for Lugazi.
The eight winners from this stage will progress to the quarter-finals of the prestigious domestic tournament organized by Federation of Uganda Football Associations.
The champion of the Stanbic Uganda Cup will also secure Uganda’s slot in the CAF Confederation Cup for the next continental season.
