Pepsi University Football League 2025/26 action heated up on Wednesday as Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Muteesa I Royal University in the first leg of their quarterfinal encounter.
The hosts made an electric start, asserting early dominance through Richard Lagu, who broke the deadlock in just the 6th minute. Lagu capitalized on a well-crafted move initiated by Francis Ogwang, giving Uganda Martyrs a dream opening in front of their home crowd.
Despite the early setback, Muteesa I Royal University showed resilience and stayed within touching distance for most of the contest, frustrating the hosts for long spells.
As the game edged towards its conclusion, Allan Odong doubled the advantage for Uganda Martyrs deep into stoppage time, calmly finishing off a move set up by Gabriel Ogen in the 92nd minute. The late strike appeared to put the tie firmly in the hosts’ control.
However, there was still time for a final twist. Muteesa I Royal University were awarded a penalty in the dying moments, which Ali Lutwama converted to reduce the deficit to 2-1. The late goal could prove crucial as it handed the visitors a valuable lifeline ahead of the decisive return leg.
With the tie finely poised, attention now shifts to the second leg, where both sides will battle for a place in the semifinals.
Elsewhere, the quarterfinal action continues on Thursday as St Lawrence University host Ndejje University at Kavule, while Friday will see Nkumba University travel to face Kumi University.
