Uganda’s women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, have officially been drawn into a challenging group ahead of this year’s FIBA Women’s Afrobasket, with the continental competition set to tip off from July 26 to August 3 in Ivory Coast.
Following the official draw held in Abidjan, the Ugandan side finds itself in Group C, alongside African basketball powerhouses Senegal and Guinea, a pool that promises intense matchups and high stakes.
Under the stewardship of Nicholas Natuhereza, the Gazelles secured their slot in the prestigious tournament with a remarkable performance during the regional qualifiers in February, stunning Egypt on their home court to clinch the Zone V title in Cairo.

That victory marked a defining moment in Uganda’s basketball journey and underlined the team’s rising status on the African stage.
This will be Uganda’s fourth appearance at the Afrobasket, having previously graced the event in 1997, 2015, and most recently in 2023.
With momentum on their side, the Gazelles will be eager to make a deeper run this time around.
The tournament format allows for only the top team in each group to automatically secure a spot in the quarter-finals, while the second- and third–placed teams must battle it out in a do-or-die playoff round for the remaining spots in the final eight.
Here’s how the draw has shaped up for the group stage:
- Group A: Côte d’Ivoire, Angola, Egypt
- Group B: Mali, Cameroon, South Sudan
- Group C: Senegal, Uganda, Guinea
- Group D: Nigeria, Mozambique, Rwanda
