Vipers Strike First in CAF Champions League Opener

Vipers SC’s journey to the glittering group stages of the CAF Champions League began on a bright note after edging African Stars 1-0 in their preliminary round opener on Friday evening.

Played at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, where the Namibian champions were forced to host due to a lack of CAF-certified venues, the Venoms showed grit, class, and resilience to take command of the tie.

The decisive moment came as early as the 13th minute when defender Hillary Mukundane rose highest to head home, sending the travelling fans into wild celebrations.

Vipers continued to turn the screw, with skipper Milton Karisa and striker Yunus Sentamu creating golden opportunities, but the killer second goal proved elusive.

Still, Roberto “The Belgian” coach’s charges held firm at the back, showcasing defensive steel to frustrate the hosts and seal a priceless away win.

The Venoms now return to St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, with a slender but vital lead for the return leg set for next Saturday.

Victory on aggregate will pit them against the winner between Zambia’s Power Dynamos and Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas in the second preliminary round.
