Vipers Urged to Sign Nigerian Player to Honor Late Abubakar Lawal

After Abubakar Lawal was laid to rest in Sokoto State, Nigeria, sports officials and community members have urged Vipers SC to consider bringing in another Nigerian footballer as a way of preserving the memory of the late forward.

Lawal, who tragically lost his life on February 24, 2025, was buried on March 3 in his hometown.

The ceremony drew a significant crowd, including grieving relatives, football executives, and a delegation from Vipers SC led by club representative Kenneth Muwanga.

Having signed with the club in July 2022 from AS Kigali in Rwanda, the 29-year-old quickly gained admiration from fans.

Recognized for his discipline, humility, and unwavering faith, Lawal regularly attended prayers at Masjid Bwebajja while living in Uganda.

On the field, he played a crucial role in Vipers SC’s triumphant 2023 season, contributing to their Uganda Premier League and Uganda Cup victories.

However, the exact circumstances of his death remain under investigation. Initial reports suggested a road accident, but subsequent findings indicated that he fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala.

Authorities in Uganda are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews to clarify the events leading up to his untimely passing.

In a tribute to his life, Vipers SC organized a Dua prayer session at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, where teammates, fans, and club officials gathered to honor his memory. His brother,

Mansoor Lawal, conveyed the family’s gratitude to Vipers SC and club president Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa for their unwavering support.

“This is a heartbreaking moment for our family. Abubakar was our main pillar. Allah gives and Allah takes. We deeply appreciate the efforts of Vipers SC and Dr. Mulindwa in ensuring he was given a dignified burial in Sokoto. We also call upon Ugandan authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into his passing,” Mansoor said.

During the burial, Sokoto State Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed, urged Vipers SC to sign another Nigerian player in honor of Lawal, stressing the strong relationship between the club and Nigerian footballers.

“Vipers SC has provided commendable support during this trying period. We have heard from Mr. Kenneth Muwanga and the Nigerian embassy about their involvement.

Lawal had a strong connection with the club. We send our best wishes to the club president, management, players, and the Ugandan football community,” Dr. Mohammed noted.
