Vipers SC began their Uganda Premier League title defence on a positive note after edging Entebbe UPPC 1-0 in a tense encounter at the Fisheries Ground, Bugonga, on Saturday evening.
Midfield orchestrator Karim Watambala was the hero of the day, netting the solitary goal in the 62nd minute after combining neatly with Yunus Sentamu, whose well-weighted pass split open the hosts’ defence.
The defending champions, whose campaign had been delayed due to earlier disputes and international commitments, appeared determined to reassert their dominance.

Despite periods of pressure from the newly promoted Entebbe outfit, Vipers’ backline held firm, marshalled by Man of the Match Alfred Mudekereza, who produced a crucial save to deny former Venom Isa Bugembe in the closing stages.
The hard-earned win lifts Vipers off the foot of the table to 13th position, signalling their intent to climb swiftly back into familiar territory. Entebbe UPPC, who entered the tie unbeaten at home, now drop to 8th place with seven points from five games.
Vipers will now turn their attention to a mouthwatering clash against traditional rivals KCCA FC at Kitende next Friday, while Entebbe UPPC hit the road to face Calvary FC in their next league assignment.
