Uganda’s long-distance icon Joshua Cheptegei once again stamped his authority on the global road-running stage after claiming gold in the men’s 25KM race at the 2025 Tata Steel World Marathon in Kolkata, Eastern India, on Sunday, December 21.

Cheptegei powered to victory in a commanding 01:11:49, holding off a spirited challenge from Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu, who crossed the line seven seconds later in 01:11:56.

Tebello Ramakongoana completed the podium after a tightly contested finish, securing bronze in 01:11:59 as the elite field thrilled spectators lining the Kolkata streets.

In the women’s 25KM contest, Degitu Azimeraw emerged triumphant with an impressive time of 01:19:36, underlining her dominance in the race.

Fellow Ethiopian Sutume Kebede settled for silver in 01:20:28, while Meselech Alemayehu claimed bronze after clocking 01:20:48, completing an all-Ethiopian podium.

The event also delivered memorable moments for the host nation, with Gulveer Singh producing a standout performance to finish as the top Indian runner in the men’s race, setting a new national record of 01:12:06.

In the women’s category, Seema led the Indian charge with a time of 01:26:04, earning loud applause from the home crowd.

The Tata Steel World 25KM Kolkata, recognized as the world’s first Gold Label 25K race, continues to grow in stature and participation, cementing its reputation as Eastern India’s biggest mass sporting event.
