Buganda Kingdom Launches Comprehensive Sports Programme for 2026

Buganda Kingdom has rolled out an action-packed and ambitious sports calendar for 2026, setting the stage for a year where competition, culture, and community engagement take center stage. Spanning modern disciplines such as motorsport, cycling, and badminton, alongside traditional games like mweso, the calendar reflects the Kingdom’s renewed drive to use sport as a tool for youth empowerment, unity, and sustainable development.

Speaking at the official launch held on January 13, the Kingdom’s Minister for Youth, Sports and Arts, Owekitiibwa Robert Serwanga, underscored the strategic importance of sport in shaping the future of Buganda’s young population. He noted that the 2026 calendar is built on inclusivity and collaboration, ensuring opportunities for participation at grassroots, school, and elite levels across all counties and age groups.

The sporting year will begin with the Buganda Sports Awards Gala, celebrating outstanding athletes and contributors who have elevated the Kingdom’s sporting profile. Motorsport enthusiasts will later witness the return of high-octane action through the Kabaka Birthday Motor Sprint and the Coronation Motor Sprint, while the Buganda Cycling Tours will traverse various counties, promoting fitness, unity, and environmental awareness.

Community-based competitions remain the backbone of the calendar, with Gombolola Games in football and netball, as well as mweso, providing a vital pathway for talent identification and local engagement. These competitions will feed into the Kingdom’s flagship events, most notably the fiercely contested Masaza Cup, which continues to attract massive crowds and national attention.

The Kabaka’s Birthday Run will once again rally participants from within Uganda and the diaspora, reinforcing its long-standing mission of raising awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In addition, the Buganda Schools Gala will open the platform for young athletes from both primary and secondary schools, welcoming participation beyond Buganda as part of broader national integration.

The calendar will culminate with the Bika Games, a cultural spectacle that celebrates clan heritage, unity, and identity through sport. With a carefully structured and inclusive program, Buganda Kingdom has firmly positioned 2026 as a defining year where sport becomes a powerful driver of pride, opportunity, and collective progress.
