Eight Red Devo FC Fans Confirmed Dead In Luweero

KALULE, Luweero District — March 21, 2026

Grief has engulfed the football community following a devastating road crash that claimed the lives of eight supporters of Red Devo FC along the busy Kampala–Gulu Highway.

The fatal accident occurred at Kalule in Luweero District when a taxi transporting the fans collided with a log-laden lorry.

The supporters were returning to Amolatar after witnessing their team’s 4-0 loss to Express FC in the Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 16 clash held at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.

According to initial reports, three victims, Oyuku Arafat, Owiny Bonny (popularly known as Kawinya), and Odyek Juma died instantly at the scene.

Their remains were later conveyed to the mortuary as emergency responders battled to save others.

By mid-morning on Saturday, the death toll had tragically risen to eight after five more individuals succumbed to their injuries at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Among those confirmed dead are Oyuku Arafat, the club’s transport officer; Adar Geoffrey, the club CEO; Ocen Thomas; and Ogwal Rafael. Authorities have indicated that identification of all victims is still ongoing.

Six survivors remain in critical condition at Mulago, while four others are undergoing treatment at a health facility within Luweero District.

Club representatives, including Public Relations Officer Peter Olwo, widely known as Veteran Giggs, and chairperson Ocen Obua, confirmed the heartbreaking development. They urged the football fraternity and the public to stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this painful period.

The incident has cast a dark cloud over Ugandan football, with supporters, clubs, and stakeholders mourning the loss of passionate fans who had travelled in unwavering support of their team.

Police have since launched investigations into the cause of the crash, with preliminary findings suggesting a dangerous encounter between the passenger taxi and the heavily loaded lorry.
