Kenyan MP Peter Salasya Assaulted During FIFA World Cup Qualifier at Nyayo Stadium

Kenyan legislator Peter Kalerwa Salasya is recovering from injuries after being attacked by unidentified individuals in Nairobi.

The Mumias East MP was caught in a chaotic scene at Nyayo National Stadium during a FIFA World Cup qualifier match, where Kenya suffered a 2-1 defeat against Gabon.

Salasya, who was among the thousands of spectators attending the high-stakes game, became the target of aggression from a section of fans reportedly linked to a rival political camp.

The situation escalated as objects were hurled at him, forcing security personnel to intervene and escort him to safety.

Speaking from his hospital bed, the outspoken MP expressed his frustration but emphasized his decision to avoid confrontation. “I had choices, but I chose peace. I didn’t want my hands stained with blood,” he remarked. However, he issued a stern warning, suggesting he would not hesitate to retaliate in a future scenario.

The thrilling match marked Kenya’s first home fixture since 2023 and served as the debut test for newly appointed head coach Benni McCarthy of South Africa.

The event also drew the presence of prominent opposition leader Raila Odinga, adding to the spectacle of the evening.

On the pitch, Gabonese forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, a former Arsenal star, delivered an outstanding performance, netting both goals for the visiting side.

Kenya’s captain, Michael Olunga, managed to pull one back for the Harambee Stars, but it wasn’t enough to secure a positive result.

Gabon now leads Group F with 15 points from six matches, while Kenya remains in fourth place, stagnating at six points.

The Harambee Stars will need a significant turnaround to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
