MLS Fines Messi and Suarez After Heated Miami-NYCFC Clash

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have been handed fines by Major League Soccer (MLS) following their involvement in heated incidents during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with New York City FC at DRV PNK Stadium on Saturday. The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced the sanctions on Tuesday, emphasizing violations of the league’s conduct policies.

A widely shared video showed Messi grabbing a New York City FC coach by the neck after the final whistle, causing a brief but intense confrontation. MLS cited its strict policy against physical contact targeting an opponent’s face, head, or neck when issuing the fine.

Luis Suarez also found himself in disciplinary trouble, receiving a fine for pinching NYCFC defender Birk Risa on the back of the neck during halftime. The league determined the act was a breach of its sportsmanship guidelines.

Although the specific amounts of the fines remain undisclosed, MLS reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a high standard of behavior among players and coaching staff.

Despite the disciplinary headlines, Inter Miami had a reason to celebrate after clinching a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City, securing a 4-1 aggregate triumph and advancing to the second round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Messi was instrumental in the win, netting the opener in the 19th minute. Teammates Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez added to the tally before halftime, while Memo Rodriguez managed a consolation goal for Sporting Kansas City in the 63rd minute.

“We’re thrilled to move forward in the tournament,” an Inter Miami spokesperson stated. “The squad played exceptionally well, and we’re eager for the next challenge.”

Inter Miami now turns its attention to facing 2024 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup champions Cavalier FC. The first leg is scheduled for March 6th at Chase Stadium in Miami, with the return match set for March 13th at Stadium East Field in Kingston, Jamaica.
