Mugerwa Faces Former Bosses As Lugazi visit Police FC

Simon Peter Mugerwa makes a highly anticipated return to Police Arena on Thursday when his Lugazi side faces Police FC in a Uganda Premier League Matchday 16 encounter, with the hosts desperate to finally register their first ever victory over the Najjembe-based club.

Mugerwa, now in charge of Lugazi, remains a familiar figure at Police after playing a key role in guiding the Cops back to the topflight.

He was also the head coach of the Kiira Road outfit until midway through last season, making Thursday’s clash an emotional reunion with his former side.

Police will head into the contest determined to return to winning ways and remain within touching distance of the league’s top positions.

The 2005 champions sit 6th on the table with 28 points, but have seen their early season momentum slow down after suffering defeat to leaders Vipers and settling for a draw against URA FC.

Those results have left Police eight points behind the summit, meaning any further slip could dent their ambitions of staying in the title conversation.

For Lugazi, the mission is clear, collect vital points to ease relegation fears early in the season.

They are currently 12th with 15 points, just four above the relegation zone, and will view this fixture as an opportunity to extend their positive record against Police.

The visitors will take confidence from their recent goalless stalemate with SC Villa, a performance that showcased their defensive resilience against one of the league’s heavyweight sides.

Lugazi are also expected to parade new faces signed during the ongoing transfer window, including Hamza Mulambuzi and Umar Kyebataala.

However, much responsibility will fall on the experienced Richard Ayiko to marshal the backline against a Police attack that boasts Bedia Ikamba, Umar Kasumba and Charles Bbale.

Key Stat

Lugazi remain unbeaten against Police in all competitions, having won once and drawn four times in their previous meetings.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Maroons FC host Kitara at Luzira, while Mbarara City and Calvary lock horns in a tense bottom-of-the-table battle in Kamwenge.
