Mulongo’s Late Strike Keeps Vipers Firmly on Top

Vipers SC left it late but ultimately secured a narrow 1–0 victory against Calvary FC in a tense Uganda Premier League encounter played under the floodlights at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende on Saturday night.

The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute when forward Gusto Mulongo calmly slotted home to settle the contest and preserve Vipers’ four-point advantage at the summit of the table.

The hosts dominated possession for large spells of the match but struggled to break down a determined Calvary side. Goalkeeper Hadji Shukuru produced several excellent saves to frustrate the Venoms, notably denying Glodi Beyuku Munsi and Rogers Torach during the opening exchanges.

Vipers continued to pile on pressure throughout the second half, with Dasylva coming agonizingly close after striking the woodwork as the home side searched for the breakthrough.

Their persistence finally paid off late in the game when substitute Yunus Ssentamu surged into the penalty area and delivered a well-timed pass to Mulongo, who finished with composure to send the home supporters into celebration.

Despite sitting at the bottom of the standings, Calvary delivered a spirited display and showed resilience similar to their first-round meeting, when they managed to hold the Venoms to a goalless stalemate at Midigo.

The result restores Vipers’ four-point cushion over Kitara FC in second place, while Calvary remain rooted at the foot of the table with five points as their fight against relegation continues.

Attention now shifts to the Uganda Cup for Vipers, who will host Iganga United on Wednesday before returning to league action with a crucial showdown against Kitara next month. Calvary, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they entertain Buhimba United Saints.

Elsewhere on matchday 21, Express FC ended a seven-game winless streak with a convincing 3–1 triumph over URA FC at Nakivubo Stadium.

Earlier in the day, KCCA FC cruised to a 3–0 victory against Lugazi FC in Najjembe, while SC Villa secured a 2–0 away win over Entebbe UPPC in Entebbe. Meanwhile, Maroons FC and UPDF FC shared the spoils in a goalless draw.
