Uganda Cranes Shift Gears to AFCON 2025 After World Cup Exit

Uganda’s dream of making a historic appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end on Tuesday 14, October, following a 2-1 defeat to Algeria at the Stade Hocine Ait Ahmed.

Despite a spirited display, Paul Put’s side fell just short of reaching the playoff stage after finishing second in their qualification group with 18 points, an impressive tally that highlights the team’s steady rise on the continental scene.

The Cranes began the must-win encounter in thrilling fashion, stunning the home fans early when striker Steven Mukwala netted a cool finish in the sixth minute.

Moments later, Jude Ssemugabi nearly doubled the lead, his curling effort brushing past the post after another clever exchange with Mukwala.

Goalkeeper Salim Magoola stood tall between the sticks, making vital saves to preserve Uganda’s first-half lead. However, the second half brought a cruel twist.

In the 80th minute, the referee awarded Algeria a controversial penalty for a handball against Mukwala, a decision hotly contested by the Cranes.

Mohamed Amoura converted from the spot to make it 1-1. Just four minutes later, Amoura struck again from another penalty after Magoola was penalized for a challenge in the box, sealing a dramatic comeback for the hosts.

The defeat meant Uganda’s World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak, but the journey was far from a failure.

The Cranes showed tactical maturity, attacking flair, and defensive discipline throughout the qualifiers, key ingredients that promise a bright future.

With the World Cup dream now behind them, focus swiftly turns to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated for December.

Head coach Paul Put and his charges are already shifting their attention to fine-tuning the squad, building on the momentum and unity displayed during the qualifiers.
