Uganda Seeks UGX 4.255 Trillion Boost for AFCON 2027 Preparations

The Ugandan government has put forward a third supplementary budget request for the 2024/25 fiscal year, seeking an additional UGX 4.255 trillion to tackle pressing national obligations, with a strong emphasis on preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

On Tuesday, March 11, State Minister for Finance, Henry Musasizi, formally presented the financial request before Parliament.

In response, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa directed the matter to the Budget Committee for a thorough review before a final decision is reached.

“This funding proposal of Shs4.255 trillion is intended to meet crucial government commitments, including pending payments to road construction firms, security-related needs for the Ministry of Defence and Uganda Police Force, and AFCON 2027-related projects such as the completion of Hoima Stadium, the construction of Akii-Bua Stadium, training facilities, and operational expenses ahead of the tournament,” Minister Musasizi stated, as reported by Parliamentary Watch.

The additional financing highlights Uganda’s determination to ensure its readiness as a co-host of AFCON 2027.

Infrastructure development is at the heart of this initiative, with major focus placed on completing Hoima Stadium, kickstarting work on Akii-Bua Stadium, and upgrading multiple training grounds to meet CAF’s stringent standards for hosting continental football.

Beyond the sports sector, the budget aims to clear outstanding payments owed to road contractors and enhance security operations through funding allocations to the Uganda Police Force and Ministry of Defence.

The fate of this financial request now rests with Parliament’s Budget Committee, whose recommendations will shape the way forward.

With national pride and international obligations at stake, all eyes are on the upcoming parliamentary deliberations that will determine Uganda’s readiness to shine on the continental stage.
