UPL – KCCA FC chase summit security ahead of AFCON intermission

The Uganda Premier League pauses for the Africa Cup of Nations break after a busy midweek programme that tips off on Tuesday with three fixtures across the country, before matchday 11 concludes on Wednesday and Thursday.

At the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, table toppers KCCA FC will be out to tighten their grip on first place when they host struggling newcomers Buhimba United Saints FC under the floodlights at 8pm. Victory would see the Kasasiro Boys remain league leaders until action resumes next year.

KCCA go into the contest as clear favourites against a Buhimba side that has failed to win in seven consecutive matches, having started life in the top flight brightly with three wins from their opening outings. The Hoima-based club currently sit third from bottom with just 10 points.

However, KCCA will be without several key players. Richard Anyama is suspended after a red card, while Charles Lukwago, Shafik Nana Kwikiriza and Ivan Ahimbisibwe are away on national duty with the Uganda Cranes in Morocco.

Even so, coach Brian Ssenyondo will count on the experience and firepower of Derrick Nsibambi, Said Mayanja and company to unlock the visitors.

KCCA top the standings on 23 points, two clear of Vipers SC, who play on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day at Bombo Barracks Ground, UPDF FC and NEC FC lock horns in a highly anticipated “forces derby” at 4pm.

Both sides are desperate for maximum points. NEC occupy 9th place with 11 points, while UPDF are 11th, just one point adrift. A win for either side could significantly lift them away from the congested lower mid-table.

Meanwhile at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru, BUL FC face a stern test against an in-form Police FC at 4pm.

The Jinja outfit are under pressure after slipping to four straight defeats and sit on 10 points from 10 matches. Head coach Abbey Kikomeko will be keen to halt the slide, knowing only a victory can ease the growing tension.

Police, on the other hand, arrive full of confidence. Sitting 5th with 18 points, the Cops will be pushing for a win to keep pace with leaders KCCA as the league heads into the AFCON hiatus.
