URA FC pulled off a dramatic turnaround to eliminate KCCA FC and secure a place in the Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinals after a thrilling quarterfinal clash at Nakivubo on Saturday.
The pulsating encounter ended 2-2 after both normal and extra time, forcing a penalty shootout where URA held their nerve to win 4-2, thanks largely to goalkeeper Muhammed Ssekebba, who saved two spot-kicks.
KCCA looked to be in full control for large spells of the match, racing into an early lead through Saidi Mayanja just four minutes in. The Lugogo-based side doubled their advantage in the second half when Herbert Achai curled home a well-taken free-kick past Ssekebba in the 54th minute.
However, URA refused to surrender. John Innocent Kisolo ignited the comeback with a stunning long-range strike in the 84th minute that beat goalkeeper Mutwalibu Mugolofa and injected belief into the Tax Collectors.
With time running out, URA committed bodies forward, and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. Defender Ronald Otti rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser in added time, sending the game into extra time.
Neither side could find a winner in the additional 30 minutes, despite late chances, including a missed opportunity for Ashraf Mugume that could have sealed it for KCCA.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, URA were clinical. Joseph Ssemujju, captain Moses Aliro Okabo, Ronald Otti, and Isma Mugulusi all converted their kicks. KCCA, on the other hand, faltered under pressure, with Herbert Achayi and Enock Walusimbi seeing their efforts denied by the outstanding Ssekebba.
The victory sparked jubilant celebrations among URA players, officials, and fans, while KCCA were left to rue missed chances and a late collapse.
URA now advance to the semifinals, joining Vipers SC, who also progressed after edging NEC in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
