Victoria University’s rugby juggernaut, the Victoria Sharks, continue to rule the waves of university rugby after clinching the second circuit of the 2025 University 7s series in dramatic fashion, edging Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) 21–19 in a nerve-racking final at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.
The reigning champions, fresh from conquering the opening leg at Makerere University’s Graveyard Grounds, displayed unyielding grit and class to defend their perfect start to the season.
Despite being hosted by Kyambogo University, Victoria made Kyadondo feel like home, roaring to victory in front of an animated crowd that witnessed pure rugby artistry.
Unlike their relatively comfortable 14–5 win in the opening circuit, this showdown was a fierce arm wrestle that tested Victoria’s mettle.
Tries from Dan Katerega, Blaise Ochieng, and Stuart Mwayi capped by clinical conversions from Katerega and Mwayi ensured the Sharks stayed afloat in turbulent waters.

UMU, marshaled by the dynamic Rhinos twins, Arnold Ocen and Arthur Opio, refused to roll over. They struck through Moses Ali, Eku Emmanuel, and Peter Sekabira, but two missed conversions proved costly, leaving them agonizingly short of glory.
Victoria’s consistency now borders on dynasty status. With back-to-back circuit wins, they need just a top-two finish in the final leg to officially seal their third consecutive national title, a feat that would etch their name deeper into Uganda’s university rugby folklore.
Elsewhere, traditional heavyweights Makerere, UCU, and Kyambogo continued to flounder, struggling to match the Sharks’ pace and precision. Makerere’s seventh-place finish in the latest leg summed up their forgettable run so far.
All eyes now turn to the Makerere Rugby Grounds this Sunday, where the Sharks will look to complete their golden trilogy one last bite away from immortalizing themselves as the undisputed kings of university rugby.
