Why Uganda Cranes Dropped In FIFA Rankings

Uganda Cranes have endured a slide in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, dropping three places to 88th worldwide after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations outing in Morocco.

The updated standings, published on January 19, 2026, take into account recent competitive fixtures, with AFCON matches carrying heavy ranking value.

While tournament hosts Morocco surged to eighth globally and champions Senegal climbed to 12th following impressive campaigns, Uganda moved the other way after an early exit.

The Cranes had travelled to Morocco encouraged by a steady qualification run that earned them an eighth AFCON appearance.

There was quiet belief the team could compete, but performances during the tournament failed to live up to expectations.

Placed in a demanding Group C alongside Nigeria, Tunisia and neighbours Tanzania, Uganda struggled to find rhythm.

Their campaign began with a 3-1 loss to Tunisia, followed by a 1-all draw to Tanzania and finally losing 3-1 to Nigeria, exposing gaps in quality and experience.

With just one point collected from three matches, the Cranes finished bottom of the group and bowed out at the first hurdle.

That underwhelming return came at a price. Uganda dropped valuable ranking points, especially as nations that advanced to the knockout rounds enjoyed notable gains.

The outcome underlined the razor-thin margins in African football, where performances at major tournaments have a direct impact on global positioning.

Attention now turns to the future, with 2027 AFCON qualifiers approaching. For Uganda Cranes, restoring belief and consistency will be key if they are to arrest the slide, improve results and reclaim ground both on the continent and in the FIFA rankings.
