The Uganda national U-17 team’s long-awaited World Cup bow ended in heartbreak, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Canada in a pulsating Group K encounter on Wednesday night in Qatar.
In what was a historic outing, Uganda’s first-ever appearance at any FIFA World Cup tournament, the young Cubs showed no signs of stage fright, taking the game to their North American opponents with admirable confidence and flair.
James Bogere etched his name in Ugandan football folklore when he coolly slotted home in the 25th minute, handing Brian Ssenyondo’s boys a dream start.
His composed finish sparked jubilation among the Ugandan contingent and hinted at a fairytale beginning to life on the global stage.
However, the Canadians clawed their way back in the dying moments of the contest. Elijah Roche restored parity in the 88th minute with a glancing header from Aghilas Sadek’s well-delivered corner, breaking Ugandan hearts.
Moments later, substitute Marius Aiyenero completed the turnaround, converting a stoppage-time penalty to hand Canada a Houdini-like 2-1 comeback victory, their first-ever win in nine FIFA U-17 World Cup appearances.
Despite the late collapse, Uganda left an indelible mark, showcasing tactical discipline, attacking verve, and a fearless spirit that won admirers beyond Africa.
In the group’s other fixture, Christ Batola and Rémi Himbert fired France to a 2-0 win over Chile, placing the European giants atop Group K.
The Cubs will now regroup and aim for redemption when they face South American side Chile on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
