Uganda’s U17 national team, the Cubs, have pulled off a sensational upset at the 2025 FIFA U17 Boys’ World Cup, defeating France 1–0 to storm into the Round of 32 on their tournament debut.
At Aspire Zone Pitch 3 in Al Rayyan, James Bogere was the hero of the night, scoring the decisive goal in the 18th minute.
The moment came when Hamuza Ssengooba sliced open the French defense with a clever through ball, allowing Bogere to calmly slot past goalkeeper Ilan Jourdren, sending Ugandan fans into jubilation.

From that point, it was all about discipline and heart. Coach Brian Ssenyondo’s side defended courageously, soaking up wave after wave of French pressure.
The backline remained rock-solid, while the goalkeeper stood firm to ensure Uganda’s lead stayed intact until the final whistle.
Ssenyondo made just one tactical tweak from the 1–1 draw with Chile, bringing in Arafat Nkoola for Innocent Asiimwe, a change that injected fresh energy and composure in midfield.
When the dust settled in Group D, Uganda, France, Canada, and Chile all finished on four points, but the Cubs advanced as one of the best third-placed teams on goal difference, a reward for their resilience and fighting spirit.
Next, Uganda will face Switzerland, the Group F leaders with seven points, in what promises to be another thrilling test for the fearless young Cubs.
