League leaders Vipers SC reinforced their grip on the top of the Uganda Premier League table after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Mbarara City FC at Rwamwanja Stadium on Saturday.
The Venoms struck once in each half through Arafat Usama Kiza and Yunus Sentamu, while the hosts pulled one back courtesy of Tom Kakaire.
Vipers opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Usama calmly slotted home from close range after a well-worked move that began with a clever cut-back from Milton Karisa.
The home side, popularly known as the Ankole Lions, responded strongly in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Kakaire unleashed a powerful long-range effort from about 25 yards that beat Vipers goalkeeper Dennis Kiggundu.
With the contest seemingly heading for a stalemate, Vipers found a late winner. Karisa turned provider again in the 85th minute, delivering a teasing ball to the far post where substitute Sentamu finished clinically past goalkeeper Derrick Emukule.
Sentamu had been introduced earlier in the 74th minute, replacing Joseph Marvin Youngman as part of a tactical double substitution that also saw Odili Chukwuma come on for Enock Ssebagala.
The victory marked Vipers’ 13th win in 19 league matches this season, lifting them to 44 points and maintaining a four-point advantage over second-placed Kitara FC, who were held to a 1-1 draw by UPDF FC on Friday.
For Mbarara City, the defeat was their 10th of the campaign, leaving them in 13th place with 15 points.
Elsewhere, league newcomers Entebbe UPPC FC and URA FC settled for a stalemate after playing out a goalless draw at the slippery Fisheries Institute Ground.
